When talented artists from two different groups come together, to form a supergroup, the output is always worth a listen. Noteworthy Chicago musicians did it and, they produced a record I still can’t stop playing; so why can’t two acts on the west coast have similar success? Famed melancholy popsters Earlimart and like-minded Grandaddy are friends – I’d guess have ran in the same circles for years. Maybe due to their laid-back, dreary, yet gorgeous sounding records, they decided it was time to revamp their style – and produce a summer record. Or, simply, have fun in the studio and on record. The latter sounds about right:
So, recording started and sure enough, it’s loose and enjoyable as expected. Sometimes it’s even hilarious and insane. Anything but dull. This hybrid of the two acts came to be known as Admiral Radley, with their musical genes producing the I Heart California LP. The upbeat numbers are a breath of fresh air with their carefree pop tendencies; the minimalistic sentimental pieces borrow everything I fell for upon hearing Earlimart for the first time. Sure, with quality like this, I have room for a few more California songs.
