A Jetpack to Seattle…

Today, March 6th, I’m going to witness my first show of the year. It’s my fault, really. No one else is to blame. Tonight’s showcase is the Scottish quartet We Were Promised Jetpacks – an act I’m no stranger to on record. When I did have an opportunity to see them, I opted for the more guaranteed act: The Features. Festivals and their taxing schedules can be a bitch.

This lack of exposure to live music in 2010 has my musical appetite insatiable, and I am desperate to stand in front of a live band – so much that I took the time and opened my ears to this evening’s openers for WWPJ. This was not me years prior to today. If it wasn’t an act I already knew, or came HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by a trusted source, I’d strive to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before the act I wanted to see was to ignite the stage.

KEXP, an excellent radio station out of Seattle, is also an encyclopedia of live performances meticulously recorded and available to be aurally taken in; and so easily accessible for my and your listening pleasure. What better way to determine if a band’s live energy is worth anyone’s time than to listen to a previous live performance?

Using this invaluable resource, my anticipation for tonight’s Jetpacks’ show exponentially grew, and I also realized the openers needn’t be witnessed this evening.

Not only an excellent resource for recent acts; remember 2004 and Arcade Fire? Helmets were required back then…
