“Raise the Spirit” and this blog, Grant-Lee style

Like a phoenix, this site seriously needs to rise from the ashes. Damn. It has been awhile, but we’ve all been busy. Since I last checked in, I’ve successfully passed my doctoral comprehensive exams and defended my dissertation prospectus, meaning I’m officially “ABD” – All But Dissertation. My working dissertation title is A Fire up North: Canadian Popular Music Policy and the Rise of Canadian Independent Music. Interested parties feel free to contact me….

Last night I saw Grant-Lee Phillips, one of my favorite musicians, perform in Denver at the new (location that is) Soiled Dove Underground out near Cherry Creek. Despite its strange, suburban strip mall location, it was a great dinner theatre atmosphere. Sitting just feet from a stage is always lovely. Phillips was in rare form. He warned the audience early that the show would have “velocity” and he would be rocking out with his band, made up of a bass guitarist and drummer. Playing a diverse collection from his new album, Stranglet, his solo material, and his former band Grant Lee Buffalo, Phillips was obviously enjoying himself on stage. He even adeptly handled a heckler from New Zealand, who finally had to be tossed (even after she heard her favorite song, “Mockingbirds”).

“Raise the Spirit” was one of the highlights from his performance and is featured on his excellent new album. The video, albeit slower than the concert performance, captures Phillips’s charisma and standard craftsmanship.

He’s playing in Chicago tonight at the Lakeshore Theater…I wish I had posted earlier. He’s highly worth seeing. There aren’t many better solo performers around today.

I’m keeping this short, in hopes I can post again…soon.

Wow! It’s been awhile since I even directed my brower over to this site. You’re damn right, Joe, it’s been too damn long since anyone has posted. We went all through April without anything.

Solid track! Jason and I may have been down for this last week.

I saw Grant Lee Phillips last year in Western Mass, and he truly gives an amazing show! He’s got a great repartee with the audience and is very charming. Definitely worth seeing.
